Finding the perfect hairdresser for you is not as difficult as you may at first think, all it takes is a little time and some research. Basically the three things to consider when it comes to settling on a stylist you can be comfortable with are training, personality and their dedication to the job.

Some hairdressers can be too into their own ideas about what looks good and the kind of hairstyles they like to create. These are the ones to avoid, as a good hairdresser will always be interested in finding out what it is you want from a visit to the salon.

Other hairdressers to avoid are the ones who don’t keep up with current hairdressing trends or don’t seem to learn new techniques. You don’t want to keep getting a look that was fashionable 10 or worse 20 years earlier – nothing will age you more!

Good communication is vital when choosing a hairdresser who can meet your particular needs. You need to feel that you can talk openly and honestly with your hairdresser and vice versa. A good hairdresser should be able to advise you – in a professional way - if something you have requested is not suitable for your hair type or face shape.

One of the best personality traits to look for in a hairdresser is their passion for the job. A good hairdresser will sound enthusiastic and will happily talk about further training courses they have taken or new techniques they have learned. If your hairdresser seems bored and looks like they are just there to pick up a pay check it might be time to move on.

One way to shop around and find the best hairdresser for you is to get something simple done such as your bangs or ends trimmed. Check out the way the salon runs, does it seem organized or chaotic. How well did they greet you on your arrival? This is when you can also check out the personality of your chosen stylist. Did they listen to you? Seem dedicated to helping you achieve what you wanted? If the answer is yes then you may have found a good match.

Don’t be afraid to ask any potential stylist about the training they have had or if they continue to learn about new cutting and coloring techniques etc. It’s fair to ask if a hairdresser has up-to-date skills and a good hairdresser won’t find the question offensive – in fact they will be keen to tell you all about it.

Finally you can always ask friends or family if they have any recommendations. Word of mouth is often the best way to find an impressive stylist, particularly if you can see the results of a great haircut on a friend or family member.

If you’re brave enough and you see someone with great hair when you’re out and about you could always walk over and ask where they get their hair done. Most people will be happy to tell you and will enjoy the compliment you have just given them.

Finding the perfect hairdresser for you may take some time and it may mean trying out a few different salons before you find the right person. It’s well worth the effort though, as we all know when we have great hair we feel good about ourselves so take some time and don’t be afraid to try out a few places until you find the perfect match for you.
