Sometimes you just have to face facts, your favorite hair salon just isn’t hitting the right spot any more. Maybe they have put their prices up, changed staff or don’t seem to be up to date on new looks and techniques? Perhaps you want a certain type of hair extensions that they don’t offer or maybe your hair care needs have changed and you need a fresh approach?
Whatever your reason for changing hair salons the first thing you need to know is that you don’t need to feel guilty for wanting a change. Loyalty to a salon is admirable but if that salon is no longer a good match for your particular hair care needs it doesn’t make sense to keep going just because you feel you should.
A good thing to do to work out if you need to move on is to write a list of the pros and cons about your present salon. This can help you to get your issues into perspective. You may notice that you only have a few minor niggles with your present salon and this could easily be fixed by communicating with the team at the salon first, before you jump ship.
So if you are bothered about price increases for example, you could discuss the issue with the salon manager. If you are a loyal and long-term customer they may be prepared to cut you a price break to keep you happy.
If you have found service a bit sloppy - say you were made to wait too long when you came in for an appointment - this is also worth mentioning. Many salon owners want feedback that will help them to up their game and keep up with their competitors. Letting them know something like this could be all it needs for them to make sure it doesn’t happen to you or other clients again.
However if you really are unhappy with the way your hair looks after a visit to your regular salon then it may be time to move on. You’re supposed to leave a salon looking and feeling better than when you went in, so if you’ve just paid out for a bad cut or color then it’s no wonder you’re feeling fed-up. It may be that you need to find a new salon that is up to speed on new trends and hair styling techniques.
You don’t have to tell your old salon you won’t be coming back but some people do – the choice is yours. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of never returning but some salons may call you up to find out if you want to book an appointment if they haven’t heard from you in a while. This can make you feel like you’re ‘on the spot’ but if you feel comfortable with it tell them why you won’t be returning. They are professionals and receiving feedback, both positive and negative, is to be expected.
A new salon may well ask where you had your hair cut previously when you turn up as a new customer. It’s better not to get into whining about your previous salon but more importantly tell your new hair stylist exactly what you want and ask directly if they can meet your needs.
And remember making the change could be the best thing you do for your hair.
