I got the chance to interview one of my stylists, Tiffany Taylor, about Hairdreams Hair Extensions
I had questions. I had opinions. I didn’t realize how much I didn't care for strand by strand until I got into the interview. I was determined to see the holes in what Hairdreams was about.
CB: What kind of hair does Hairdreams offer?
TT: They offer two types: 5 Star which is Indian Remy and 7 Star which is European hair.
Here is what I pulled from the Hairdreams website about their human hair:
5 Star Hair is a very good hair quality. This hair is made from black human hair, which comes primarily from India and the bordering countries.
This black hair is not collected by Hairdreams representatives, but purchased from wholesalers. Therefore this hair has to be re-arranged, so that all the hairs point in the same direction (root and end).
After that the black hair is gently lightened in a time-consuming osmosis process, and then colored to match the different colors of the natural hair spectrum.
7 Star Hair is raw hair of European type in all natural colors ranging from blonde to dark brown, which come from all over the world.
Specially trained Hairdreams representatives select and collect this hair according to highest quality standards. This hair has to be virgin hair (neither colored nor chemically treated) and it can’t be damaged in any way.
After it has been collected, the raw hair is hand-selected and hand-sorted, hair by hair, in an elaborate and labor-intensive process. This process of hand-selection takes about 10 days for an average hair extension.
Altogether Hairdreams Special Hair passes through a very complex 15-step process. Hundreds of hands ensure that our product meets our standard of perfect quality and highest satisfaction.
We make this enormous effort so that the color of the hair only has to be changed slightly in order to match the natural hair spectrum. The refinement process puts such minimal chemical strain on it that one can really almost speak of virgin hair.
CB: Yah, right.. European hair? Let me feel the samples they sent…
She presented me with a bundle of blond 7 star hair. Before I examined it I grabbed a couple other samples of hair from two other hair extension brands we carry.
I began my inspection. After about 5 minutes of wanting to find a flaw I had to stop.
I could tell a difference in the texture. The hair was finer. Tiffany explained to me that that Hairdreams recommends the hair be shampooed and conditioned before the application.
“What?”, I said. Most extension companies send their products out with a silicone coating. That’s why most hair feels good utnil the first time you shampoo it.
CB: Has this hair been shampooed?
TT: Yep.
CB: Wow, that is amazing.
TT: Yep.
CB: What other things are unique about the hair?
TT: The 7 Star Hair can be reused up to 3 times. When clients send it off it takes about 6 weeks to get it back and they can save $20% off the cost of new hair. It’s just that good.
CB: (impressed but quiet)
CB: How long does it last?
TT: 4-6 Months.
CB: No way.. All the knowledge I have about extension goes against that. Doesn’t the hair start to tangle at the root? Doesn’t the extensions start to dangle?
TT: (patiently) Actually, Hairdreams has a really cool way to keep all of that in check. Clients come in for a Tidy Cut Maintenance about once a month. I go in and deal with all the shedded hair, make sure everything is completely detangled, the bonds are all separated from each other and then deep condition the hair.
CB: Any special care that is different with Hairdreams?
TT: The biggest thing that comes to mind is to educate your client on separating the bonds EVERY SINGLE DAY. This really helps make sure the hair will last the entire application time.
CB: What about at the 3 month mark when the hair has grown out and is dangling?
TT: The tool that is used to apply the Hairdreams extensions allows me to get super close to the scalp. Also, around the 3-4 month mark I can remove some strategic bonds in the top sections and sides. I will replace with new hair to make sure nothing is showing.
CB: Do you keep the hair that you take out?
TT: If it is 7 Star Hair and they plan to reuse, then yes.
CB: What about bond failure (when stuff falls out) What makes Hairdreams special?
TT: Hairdreams has a very set way to take care of extensions. Absolutely no conditioner on the root. It compromises the integrity of the bond over time. Ever see clients coming in with milky colored bonds?
CB: Yes…
TT: That’s what happens when the bond is breaking down. It should not be doing this.
CB: Ohhhhh (lights coming on, revelations happening)
CB: Let’s talk bond size. I hate cutting them down. These look way smaller than what I am used to.
TT: Well, the bonds come in 4 different sizes. I like to mix and match depending on where the placement is. The sides usually need smaller bonds.
There are several times a year I get the AHA! feeling. This is a big one for me. I realize that I had not been doing several things that could have made my personal Strand by Strand and my clients experiences better. It appeared Hairdreams had it together in a way that I didn’t expect.
CB: What about curly hair? Do they offer that?
TT: Curly hair is special order, however, the hair comes in a natural beachy wave. It will straighten easily but it can also be scrunched to get that sexy wave everyone wants right now.
CB: Let me see the care products.. I am sure they are ugly and smell bad. (I am a bossy at times, please forgive me)
Tiffany goes over the products and details out what she likes. I have to admit I like the packaging and the smell. I got the chance to use them and was impressed with the quality.
CB: Tell me about the removal. What type of bonding agent is used.
TT: It is a Nylon Thermal Plast. I like it better than Keratin bond because the removal is as snap. Keratin bonding usually is over bonded. It is too strong. The Hairdreams bond is super strong but not so strong that you have to struggle to remove them.
By the end of our conversation I was on my way to loving Hairdreams. Of course, I did my due diligence and asked a few stylist friends of mine what their thought were on Hairdreams.
No one had anything negative to say. Nada. They said the hair is AMAZING and their clients thought the price more than worth it.
One of my friends: “Why are you asking me, I thought you were the hair extension expert?”.
Hairdreams is the ultimate luxury strand by strand extension. They have beautiful hair, great technology, and a well thought out process. I plan to use several of their techniques and care ideas on some of our other hair extension systems.
I thought I had strand by strand all figured out.. Turns out I was wrong!
