Choosing hair extensions can be more than a little bit confusing. You would think that there would be a general consensus among all the hair extension manufacturers on certain terms that would guarantee that the quality level is the same throughout the industry.

Such is not the case. If anything it can be the complete opposite from brand to brand.

One of the most important thing is understanding what the terms remy and non remy mean and how they relate to buying human hair extensions.

Remy hair in its most basic format is hair that is collected so that it remains aligned in one direction. This ensures that the cuticle is not inverted. Why would that matter you ask? The cuticle is the outer layer of the human hair strand. If you were to magnify this strand what you would find that this layer looks very much like the scales of a fish.

This is the protective outer layer. If the hair is not collected where this outer layer is all going one way, these “scales” or cuticle can work against each other. Non remy hair tends to tangle because the cuticle is snagging on on the other hair that has the cuticle “scales” going in another direction.

The first mistake you are going to make is to assume that remy hair is the best. The term remy hair does not refer at all to the actual condition the hair is in.

We have all seen or had hair that is badly damaged from chemical processes. Technically, this hair falls under what industry standards classify as the best because the cuticle is all in the same direction thus making it remy.

Remy and non remy is the where you start. Usually, when a hair extension manufacturer takes the time to carefully collect the hair in a way to qualify it as remy it is a basic understanding that the hair was good enough quality in the beginning.
